City House

I realize most parents don't wait a whole year before they leave their child with a babysitter to go out together, but Tom and I did for a few reasons.

1.  W is a horrible sleeper and didn't want to anyone to have to deal with my crank monster
2.  I didn't think anyone would have been able to soothe W if he woke up but me
3.  We have no family here
4.  Not even sure how to find a trusted baby sitter
5.  Felt too guilty asking one of my friends to watch him
6.  I'm cheap - I pay a lot of money for daycare and couldn't imagine paying for a babysitter

But, I finally took one of my co-workers up on the offer as W is sleeping much better.  We had a gift card to go to City House in Germantown.  Everyone told us this was going to be a great dinner and the restaurant is really vegetarian friendly.   So, needless to say I had HIGH expectations of the place.

As we drove to the restaurant we went right by the place.  We haven't spent a lot of time in Germantown but I think that since there is nothing on the same side of the street as the place we weren't really looking over there.  The sign is also set back off the road.  Anyway, we successfully get there and the hostess takes us to our table.

We walk through a bustling dining room that reminds me a lot of Avec, a restaurant which we went to in Chicago.  Luckily for us we had a table in a back room.  It was quiet there and only 3 other tables.  Our waiter came by and was super friendly and knowledgeable.  We started looking over the menu and my heart sunk a little as there were only two main dishes on the menu that were vegetarian friendly not counting the pizza, but after living in Chicago for 5 years I'm over pizza.

Despite the lack of veg friendly items the meal itself was great.  The appetizer was home made ricotta with toast.  Tom and I both had gnocchi that was fantastic.  We then split a chocolate pie of sorts, which was honestly just okay.

So, the big test is would I go back.  Probably not.  Even though the meal was great and reasonable priced I didn't feel like it was anything special at the end of the day.  I admit I really love deserts and the desert didn't wow me so that might have pushed me over the edge.  Plus the lack of vegetarian dishes didn't really make me happy.

All and all it was a good night out.  I don't know that Tom and I will be rushing back out for another date next weekend but it defintely will take place before  W turns 2.

Hope everyone had a Happy Christmas and since I'm off for another day I might actually get our holiday wrap post completed in a timely manner.

I am glad that you were able to enjoy your date night. I found that the date nights were so important when they are little. You feel like adults together instead of being parents.

It can be tough leaving the kiddos with a babysitter for a night out, but it's worth it. They learn to live without you, you learn to live without them, and it's good for you and your hubs to have time alone outside the house.

Happy New Year PbV!! Congrats on getting out for the evening! Good Job! Babysitters can double to cost of going out for sure, and I can totally understand the your 1-6 list.

Indeed, I would NOT send veggies to City House because Tandy is all about local organic meats and curing his own meats. Tandy is not veggie friendly. We love City House because everything is made from scratch with mostly local organic ingredients, and Tandy takes care to use old world techniques to cook. The desserts, I don't love the cake-y ones, but the sorbet and gelatos are really delicious. We love the wood oven pizzas a lot. We sit at the bar most of the time to have an easy "go-to" meal when I don't feel like cooking. I also like the bar because alcohols and sodas are mostly from small makers (there is no C@ke or P*psi!) and basically no corn syrup.

I totally respect what Tandy is doing. Just wish everyone else didn't talk it up for veg friendly! The wine I did have there was some of the best!
